MutaSprite Pixelize [image → pixel art]
A downloadable tool for Windows
Your art in. Real pixel art out.
Pixelize turns painterly, rendered or AI-generated images into intentional classic pixel art — a true low-resolution grid, a curated palette, clean flat areas. It doesn't generate anything; it transforms your image, deterministically, on your machine.
What it does
- Console-authentic palettes, by name — PICO-8, Game Boy DMG, DawnBringer 16, plus console colour grids (Mega Drive 3-bit, SNES 5-bit), or an auto palette in perceptual Oklab space.
- A real conversion, not a blur — high-quality downscale to a target resolution (48–256 px, up to 512), then every pixel snaps to the palette.
- Deterministic — same input and settings give byte-identical output, every run. Drop it into a pipeline and trust it.
- Dithering & upscale — Bayer 2×2 / 4×4 or Floyd–Steinberg; integer upscale ×2/4/8; hard or preserved alpha; auto-crop.
- 100% local — Windows, no cloud, no account, no GPU.
Made it with AI? Painted at the wrong size?
Pixelize is the missing step between a concept image and a real sprite — and because it transforms your own art rather than generating new art, it sidesteps the AI-art debate entirely: the tool contains no AI and creates nothing on its own.
Questions
Is this an AI tool? No — a deterministic pipeline (downscale, palette, map). No prompts, no variation, no credits.
Pixelize or Undetail? Undetail coarsens (block mosaic, no palette). Pixelize converts — a real low-res grid plus a curated palette.
Which resolution? 128 px is the robust default; 64 px is often too coarse for faces.
How you get it
Pixelize is a paid module for MutaSprite (the free Windows app) — one-time purchase, 100% local, activate on up to 3 machines. After buying, itch gives you a one-time code; redeem it at mutatool.com/license to get your product key, then paste that key into MutaSprite's Licence dialog (or the Controlcenter) — Pixelize unlocks.
